Montoya, Leticia & Victor M. Bandala. Lactarius subgenus Piperites: a new species and a new name. Mycotaxon 89: 47-54. 2004. ABSTRACT: Two members of Lactarius subgenus Piperites were studied. Lactarius miniatosporus corresponds to a new species in section Deliciosi, found in association with Pinus in the central region of the Gulf area of Mexico. It is compared with its close relatives, L. subpurpureus from the U.S., L. thakalorum from Nepal and the European L. sanguifluus. A type study revealed that morphocharacters of the U.S. variety Lactarius scrobiculatus var. pubescens (section Crocei subsection Scrobiculati) exclude its placement under L. scrobiculatus. We propose a new rank and the new name, L. smithii for this taxon. KEYWORDS: Russulales, taxonomy, ectomycorrhizal fungi |
