ABSTRACT: The taxonomic and nomenclatural history of the genus Sphaerosporium and its type species, S. lignatile, is reviewed. This anamorph, together with a second species, S. equinum, is redescribed and illustrated. An emended generic description is provided. They are briefly compared with certain other anamorphs which bear similarly-pigmented, thick-walled, chlamydospore-like conidia.
