ABSTRACT: Acanthogymnomyces terrestris gen. et sp. nov., a gymnothecial ascomycete from Japanese soil, is described and illustrated. It is characterized by brownish ascomata with numerous long straight setae, cylindrical to pyriform asci and hyaline to pale-colored, oblate ascospores with an equitorial rim and a sulcate ornamentation. The fungus is tentatively accommodated in the Eoterfeziaceae. A new combination, A. princeps (Spiromastix princeps Udagawa et Uchiyama), is proposed.
